Teacher and student relationship is an important part of a child’s development. Jan N Hughes, Clinical Psychology and Educational Psychology Ph.D and professor at Texas A&M University published a study where she concludes “that the provision of a supportive teacher-student relationship promotes students’ behavioral adjustment and academic achievement.” In her study, she found that this support system can is an asset beginning from preschool all the way to secondary school.
In fact, other studies point out to students being better self-directed, motivated, engaged, and socially connected to their school and community when they have positive relationships with their teachers. Nonetheless, adult educators see vulnerable and impressionable students as an opportunity to manipulate and seduce them.
#1. Amy McElhenney
McElhenney taught Spanish and coached cross country at Hebron High School in Texas. The 25-year-old educator was accused of having sexual relations with her 18-year-old student. Despite the law in Texas banning educators from having sex with students even if they are of legal age, facing a possible sentence of 20 years, this woman walked free. She did, however, lose her teaching job.
#2. Carrie McCandless
McCandless was one of the teachers at the Colorado Brighton Charter School where her husband was also the principal. Her sexual abuse came to light when the 30-year-old took her students to an overnight hiking trip. Students noticed their teacher making out and fondling her 17-year-old pupil. She faced felony charges of sexual assault on an underage student and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly providing him with alcohol. The school board president David Mundy expelled the student as he didn’t want to damage his friendship with the principal.
#3. Debra Lafave
Lafave was a teacher at Angelo L. Greco Middle School in Florida. She was found to have sexual intercourse and oral sex when he was just 14 years old. The family’s victim decided not to go to trial at the advice of their psychologist who felt it would traumatize the teen even further. Furthermore, the family wanted to avoid having their son’s name out in the public. Lafave took a plead guilty deal where her probation required her to be home between 10:00 p.m and 6:00 a.m everyday, register as a sex offender, and have no contact with children. Many in Florida felt Lafave got an easy ride because she was deemed “too pretty for prison.”
#4. Sarah Jones
Jones began a sexual relationship with her 17-year-old male pupil. The former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader pleaded guilty to sexual abuse where she was consequently sentenced to five years probation and can never apply for another teaching position. Jones divorced her husband and is now engaged to her former student.
#5. Rebekah Todd
Todd served a mere six-month sentence for performing oral sex on her 17-year-old student. Videos surfaced of her attending an off-campus high school graduation where she gave alcohol to her underage students and stripped down. Police also found texts she had sent to her student commenting how great he looked without his shirt on.
#6. Michelle Preston
The Shawnee Mission West High School teacher from Kansas pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful sex with a minor. Her plea bargain allowed the 28-year-old teacher to avoid jail time. Preston was accused of having sex with at least two male students after she initiated contact with them on Facebook. The teacher would invite the students to her house where she would make out and have sex with them.
#7. Brianne Altice
Altice taught English at Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah. She was arrested in 2013 when one of her male students went to the police about her sexual abuse. Altice sexually abused various 16 and 17-year-old teens, often having sex during the lunch hour or in a church parking lot. She pleased guilty to three counts of forcible sex abuse in April 2015 with the plea agreement to drop 11 charges, including three first-degree felony rape charges.
#8. Shelley Dufresne and Rachel Respess
The two teachers were colleagues at Destrehan High School in Louisiana when they sexually abused a 16-year-old student. They engaged in a three-some in Respess’s home. 32-year-old Dufresne picked up the boy after a football game and took him to 25-year-old Respess’ apartment where according to authorities Respess had sex with the teen while Dufresne “began intimately kissing (Respess) in an attempt to arouse all parties involved, all who were complete(ly) disrobed.” Dufresne received a deferred three-year prison sentence as long as she completes 90 days of mental health treatment, she will not have to register as a sex offender. Respess’s attorney argues his client was intoxicated at the time of the encounter, therefore, she didn’t consent to sex.
#9. Amy Northcutt
Amy and Justin Northcutt were teachers at the Turlock Christian school in California when they were caught trying to lure a 16-year-old teen to have a threesome. Sexually explicit photos and texts were sent to the girl but it was a relative who noticed Justin talking to the teen outside a home that drew suspicion. The victim’s mother called the sheriff department with an investigation ensuing. Amy and Justin received two and three months in jail, respectively. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office doesn’t believe any physical contact occurred between the student and the teachers.
#10. Jessica Bonnett Acker
Bonnett Acker had only been married for seven months when she began having sex with one of her students from Bryant High School in Cottondale, Alabama. The 23-year-old teacher was charged with engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19.
#11. Deanna Higgins
Higgins taught at science at Spring High School in Texas when she began a sexual relation with her 16-year-old student. It was her husband who noticed texts on the mobile phone belonging to the couple’s eight-year-old son. Higgins pleased guilty to attempted improper relationship with a student while the more damaging charge of sexual abused of a child was dismissed. She will spend four years on probation.
#12. Eppie Sprung Dawson
Sprung Dawson was caught red-handed when police spotted a parked car. Upon further inspection, they discovered the 27-year-old half-naked with her 17-year-old student. The Catholic St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, southern Scotland fired her immediately. She was registered as a sex offender for six months and ordered to complete a course of psychosexual counselling. She can re-apply for her teaching license after two years.
#13. Kinsley Wentzky
The honors English teacher at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina was inviting two 17-year-old students to her house to have sex. The self-described “happily married mother of two,” pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery with a student 16 to 17 years of age, no aggravated force or coercion. She was placed in the Central Registry of Child Abuse/Neglect, will receive counselling, and received a suspended sentence of five years in prison. This means she will be on probation never stepping foot in jail. Her probation ends in the fall of 2017.
#14. Elizabeth Scroggs
Scroggs had been named the Best of the Best Teacher in 2010 in Georgia. The 32-year-old, however, was having sexual relations with one of her 18-year-old students. She was charged with charged with sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority. middle school.”
#15. Pamela Rogers Turner
