Everybody wants a flawless, smooth canvas so that’s how they don’t need to wear makeup. We’re advised to buy anti-aging products before we even hit twenty for “prevention” reasons and worse yet is diet culture.
just imagine if some one born with a disease that causes your skin to sag even before you hit the age of 30 and in today’s world is very devastating. Sara Geurts, she feels the same she born with a disease is called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Geurts has one of the rarest forms ever diagnosed. There are only cases like Geurts discovered worldwide.
Essentially Ehlers-Danlos is a disorder of connective tissue that causes a defect in the cellular makeup of the skin’s collagen. Collagen allows the skin to have elasticity and essentially “bounce back” into shape.our collagen gets weaker, As we get older, and that’s when wrinkles form. For those with Ehlers-Danlos, their collagen is already rapidly declining.
Sara Geurts showing herself off to the world, she hopes and can help others feel more confident in the body in which they were born with. Her goal is to become the “face” of the disease and hope that others who have gone undiagnosed can get a medical confirmation and work their way toward acceptance.
After the Instagram page Geurts found herself on this modeling path ‘LoveYourLines’ shared her story and asked her to model for them. This campaign was about empowering women who had ‘unconventional’ scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, etc. and considered as un attractive.
After finding her community and receiving so much love and support from other people who thought she was beautiful, Geurts thought she can do lots of good things along with her disease at the age of 26-year-old she explains that throughout high school she felt as if she was living a lie, but now she wants to be open about everything regarding her disease.
The syndrome causes Sara to have soft, doughy skin that is extremely fragile and her joints and muscles are also weak and often leave her in discomfort.
Although Sara doesn’t suffer from symptoms such as frequent dislocations and severely brittle bones, which are typically associated with sufferers from the classical type, Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos does come with its own pitfalls. To deal with her joint pain, Sara relies on natural remedies such as massage therapy, acupuncture and medical marijuana, which is legal in Minnesota.
The aspiring model was first diagnosed with EDS when she was seven years old.
Sara specifically has Dermatosparaxis Ehlers-Danlos, an EDS type that affects the skin. In 2015 Sara made the decision to try out modeling after receiving positive feedback from her pictures. It wasn’t until high school that Sara’s condition became more apparent and for years she struggled with low self-esteem and would often go out of her way to hide her body in the hopes of not getting bullied due to her condition. However, when she was 22, after a difficult breakup, Sara decided she needed to change how she saw herself.
And in 2015, Sara gathered the courage to submit a photo of herself to Love Your Lines, a Tumblr page encouraging women to embrace their stretch marks, scars and other imperfections.She said: “The Love Your Lines Campaign was my first campaign that I had submitted my story to, as well as my pictures.“I’ve received 25,000 likes and that was a privileged moment for me because it clicked – I could do something with this! It was just amazing, I literally cried for two hours because I was in disbelief.”
She said: “My main aspirations for modelling with Ehlers-Danlos would be to break society’s standards and the mentality that they have for perfection and what is viewed as perfection out there in media, in magazines and everything, and to really show that it is your imperfections and your uniqueness that is the true beauty out there”.
