It’s the dawn of a new year, and while we might not be all that worried about the state of our relationships, especially considering the fax that we’ve spent the holidays with our partners and had a wonderful time with them, we might need to start worrying. It turns out that the day that partners are statistically most likely to cheat is very much upon us. Weirdly enough, part of the list of New Year’s resolutions that some people want to have happen right as the holidays end is to have an affair. It sounds really disheartening, and you’d be right to feel that way, especially when you consider why people have affairs around this time, on this specific day of the year in particular. Sadly, it has less to do with the advent of the new year and a lot more to do with how they ended the previous year. Here’s why your partner is mostly like to have an affair around this time, and the exact day that they’re mostly likely to start that affair on.
It might seem like a weird New Year’s resolution to have an affair. However, that’s what many cheaters are most likely to do. Along with getting more in shape, quitting smoking, and reading and traveling more, many people actually choose to start their affairs after the new year as well.
Specifically, they want to start their affairs on January 9th. You might have noticed that January 9th is literally right around the corner. It sounds like a really arbitrary day, but according to data from thousands of cheaters, the day that the most affairs will be started this year is on January 9th.
It’s not the 9th that’s the issue. According to dating and affair facilitation site Gleeden, their site is the busiest on the second Monday after Christmas all the time. This year, that day falls on January 9th. This means that January 9th is the day that your partner is most likely to cheat on you.
The site has 3.3 million members. Gleeden has revealed that user activity always spikes right after the new year is rung in. “On Monday the 11th of January 2016, the site also recorded an increase in registrations of more than 320 per cent,” a Gleeden spokesperson revealed. That spike will most likely happen again on January 9th, 2017.
Those results were echoed when Gleeden talked to its users. They gave a survey to 13,000 of the site’s users, and a lot of them said they were more active on the site in January of previous years. When they were asked if they’d do the same this year, 71% of them said that they would be.
There’s a reason why this is. According to Solene Paillet, the director of communications at Gleeden, the increase in activity at the beginning of the year isn’t surprising at all. “By registering with Gleeden or spending more time on the online platform, members are seeking a means to inject a little excitement into their everyday life,” Ms Paillet explained.
She went on to theorize further. She thinks that the reason affairs happen so much around the new year is because of the prevalence of routine, and the new year is a chance to break that routine. “Routine may weigh down on individuals, or be rather oppressive when it follows extended periods devoted to family life. This is the result of a legitimate human need: to have fun and think of oneself.”
While those are good reasons, there are definitely other reasons why people cheat. Some people chat because of the situation that they’re in. While they might not have the personality to be serial cheaters, they might just be put in the wrong situation and then made the wrong decision as a result.
Some situations are really tempting for some people. If your partner is in a job position that involves touching other people or getting really personal, there’s always the possibility that a line is going to be crossed. The likelihood of cheating can even depend on where someone lives, because people who live in cities are a lot more likely to cheat than people living anywhere else, simply because of the anonymity factor.
Some people spend a lot of time with attractive people. Blur any of the previous lines about routine, the wrong situation, or the kind of life your partner lives, and an attractive person in their inner circle can become a lot more tempting for them. Sometimes just being around someone you’re attracted to who isn’t your partner can be enough of a pull.
Some people cheat because of relationship reasons. They might be unsatisfied with their relationship in some way. This could also be one of the reasons why cheating happens to spike so much around the new year, because the holidays can bring out the best and worst in people.
Luckily, people who cheat for relationship reasons don’t stay cheaters forever. When people who cheat for relationship reasons do so, they’re doing it because they’re trying to escape a relationship they feel stuck in. Once the relationship is okay again, that partner often never dreams of cheating again.
There are individual reasons why people cheat too. Unfortunately, people who cheat for individual reasons are often people who cheat a second time. That’s because these are qualities that aren’t about a relationship, they’re qualities about a specific person, and that can be a real issue when you’re dealing with infidelity.
Sometimes it comes down to your personality. People who are less conscientious by nature are a lot more likely to cheat, while religious people are less likely to do so because their values are so rigid. There are exceptions to this rule, though.
If you’re worried about cheating, talk to your partner about it. January 9th doesn’t have to be the day it all ends or anything. If your relationship is in trouble and there’s the possibility of someone cheating, it could still happen on any of the other days of the year, which is important to remember. However, since cheating season is very much on the horizon right now, if you’re worried about something, say something about it.
