Questions Every Woman Has About Menstrual Cups But Doesn’t Want To Ask

Menstrual cups have been around since the 1930s and have been growing in popularity in recent years. However, many women haven’t felt like the menstrual cup is right for them. To be fair, some women have issues that don’t let them use menstrual cups, or they just don’t want to use them, and that’s totally fair. However, for those of us who are curious and afraid to take the leap and get one for ourselves, there isn’t really much stopping us. At least there wouldn’t be anything stopping us in a perfect world, anyway. A lot of women have questions about menstrual cups that won’t show up in a regular menstrual cup FAQ list, so we decided to answer your burning questions. Here are some questions about menstrual cups that you were afraid to ask, and some answers you may not have expected.

Some questions are about sizing. How do we go about finding out what our menstrual cup size is? It’s not like getting a cool dress or a nice pair of shoes, really. Getting a menstrual cup is getting us to figure out the size of our vaginal canal and cervix. There’s no size chart for this sort of thing.

The answer doesn’t have to be a scary one. You don’t have to get a measuring tape or call your partner over to measure your cervix, thank goodness. The sizes aren’t even about the actually width of your vagina, it’s about how much flow you have and how low your cervix is. Regardless, both cups will hold as much as your body will give it.

Speaking of sizing, this is a big question. What if we pick a size that’s too small? Will we explode menstrual blood all over our clothes and the things we’re sitting on, just because we didn’t get the right sized cup? How often does that sort of thing happen? Will we have nightmares about high school gym class that will traumatize us over this?

These worries are a bit unfounded, guys. The worst that can happen if you go with a smaller size is that you leak a bit. We’ve all leaked, even with things like pads and tampons, so this isn’t new. You’d just have to empty it more frequently than you would if you had a bigger one. There’s a learning curve for menstrual cups, but it’s not so bad, really. At least high school gym class isn’t something we have to worry about anymore.

Other questions involve pain. What does it feel like to pull the cup out or put the cup in? Will it be painful? Will we end up having to deal with the suction of a vacuum cleaner if we try and pull it out? Is it up there with giving birth to an actual human being?

The answer is a relief for this one. There’s no real pain involved with this at all! Actually, if any part of this hurts, you might very well be doing it wrong. The cup really shouldn’t be anywhere near your cervix, and you don’t have to push the thing all that far up your vaginal canal, either.

This question might be a bit of paranoia. How big of a chance is there that we’re going to completely be unable to find our menstrual cups in our vaginas? Will the cup get totally lost, end up in our uterus or in our colon or something?

That’s not really how biology works. There is no scientific way that we’re going to lose our menstrual cups in this way. It won’t end up somewhere it’s not supposed to be unless you put it somewhere it’s not supposed to be. However, this goes back to using it correctly, so if you’re not using it correctly, that’s on you. Regardless, your cup won’t get lost that way, so don’t worry about that.

This question is probably one a squeamish person would ask. What happens if we’re weird about blood? Some women really don’t want to get up close and personal with our vaginas while we’re on our periods, and using a menstrual cup basically mandates that we do so. Will we be dealing with a horror show every time we empty our cups?

Thankfully, there’s nothing to fear on this count. If you’ve used a tampon without getting queasy, a menstrual cup will be fine for you. As long as you’re not doing anything like flinging the cup around after you take it out or being crazy with it, nothing will happen to make the scene all that gory. Just take it out gently after breaking the seal, and you’ll be golden.

This question is from those of us who like getting down during our periods. Can we have sex with a menstrual cup in? Will things end badly for us if we try having sex with a menstrual cup in? What if we have only one shot at a date and a menstrual cup mishap could blow the whole thing?

While you can do some things with your menstrual cup in, you can’t do everything. Barring one type of menstrual cup where penetrative sex is okay, you can’t do anything that involves your vagina being penetrated with a cup in. The good news is that oral sex and basically everything else is fine, so you don’t have to sit out on sex just because of your menstrual cup.

This question involves chemistry. Will we smell with a menstrual cup? Are we going to have to deal with someone close to us with a really good nose being able to guess that we’re about to start our periods, or dogs suddenly wanting to sniff us?

The answer for this is a resounding no. Thankfully, there won’t be a smell when you use a menstrual cup. Your menstrual blood only gets a smell to it after it gets exposed to air, because the blood is being oxidized. Since the menstrual blood is being kept inside of you thanks to the cup, nothing gets exposed to air, and everything stays smell free. That doesn’t eliminate the smell of your vagina, though, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing because vagina smell is a normal smell!

Menstrual cups do a lot to make life easier. Imagine being able to swim on your period without having to worry about a dirty tampon string poking its way out of your bikini. Wearing shorts at the gym on your period won’t be such a crapshoot, either. Honestly, menstrual cups can be worth the investment when you find the right one. It’s up to us if we want to take the leap.
